Bill Causey, Jr. 1944 - 2018
Bill Causey, Jr. was born December 15, 1943, in Natchitoches, LA. His father, Billie Causey, Sr., was a trumpet player and had Bill playing the trumpet by the time he could walk. He graduated from C.E. Byrd High School and earned a B.S. in Music and a M.S. in Business Administration from Centenary College of Louisiana. Bill met his wife Judy (a French horn player) at one of the summer band concerts that were held at Centenary college by Bill Causey Sr. The couple raised three children – Andrew Causey, Chad Causey and Megan Frederick. The Causey’s were married for 51 years.
When Bill was band director at Captain Shreve High School, his students asked for a jazz band. He had never done that before but his attitude was, “ok, we’ll learn together.” He started playing jazz and fell in love with it. George Hancock, one of Bill’s students from that jazz band is still playing with the Big Band.
After officially retiring from teaching, Bill began working at The Band House, a local store that sells musical instruments to band students. He took over the business and opened up two more locations. Bill never really quit teaching students. If a student was trying out an instrument in the store and Bill was there, he was always happy to make suggestions to help the student. Especially if that instrument was a trumpet!
The Bill Causey Big Band has been entertaining audiences for over 40 years. The Big Band started at the Moulin Rouge in downtown Shreveport and has played many venues such as Centenary Oyster House, Lee’s, Chicky’s Boom Boom Room, Casino Magic to most recently at Margaritaville Resort and Casino since last summer. Bill’s passion in music was Big Band Jazz and he wanted the Big Band to go on as well as the work at The Band House to provide quality instruments for new students interested in music.
Among numerous other honors, Bill is a member of the Louisiana Jazz Hall of Fame.
